Variations in Coverage When Designing Your Embroidered Patch
Embroidered patches start with a base fabric, typically a solid-coloured twill weave. The background colour can be customised to your preference, and the design elements (such as text or logos) are embroidered onto this fabric. Depending on the design, the twill fabric may be fully or partially covered by embroidery.
The extent of embroidery coverage directly affects the cost—greater coverage results in a higher price for your custom patches.
Up to 50% coverage
- Used often for text-only designs
- A lot of the base fabric is visible
75% coverage
- Most patch designs fit here
- Between 50% - 75% of the twill is covered with embroidery
100% coverage
- A thicker patch
- Between 75% - 100% of the twill is covered with embroidery, so the base fabric is barely or not at all visible
How To Attach Embroidered Patches To Textiles
We offer five different options for applying patches to textiles:
- Sew-on – Our most popular option. You can sew the patch onto your garment. This way, you ensure that the patch is firmly attached to the garment.
- Iron-on – A heat-sensitive adhesive layer is added to the back of the patch during production. Use an iron or heat-press to attach the patch to the fabric. Quick and easy, but can be less long-lasting than sew-on.
- Single-sided Velcro – The hook/rough side of the Velcro is applied to the back of the patch. The patch can be directly attached to soft fabrics like felt, or any piece of loop/ soft side Velcro.
- Double-sided Velcro – The hook/rough side of the Velcro is applied to the back of the patch. Comes with a matching loop/soft side piece of Velcro in the shape of your patch, which is to be sewn onto your fabric.
- Stick-on – A self-adhesive backing for solid surfaces. Please note that this option is not suitable for textile applications.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Embroidered Patches
How Long Does It Take To Produce Custom Embroidered Patches?
As soon as you have placed your order, we will begin on your patches! All artwork is first checked by our customer service team to make sure everything is in order. Once that is done then production on your labels, patches, and tags can begin. We aim to process all orders within 10-14 working days of ordering. Once production is complete your order will be sent via courier to your doorstep, right across Australia, New Zealand and worldwide
Do You Offer Patches Specifically For Clothing?
Our Embroidered Patches go far beyond just clothing! They're ideal for adding a personal touch to hats, bags, home decor, hiking gear, and so much more. With countless possibilities, each patch can be designed exactly as you envision and easily applied to a wide variety of surfaces.
What Are The Differences Between Embroidered & Woven Patches?
While woven and embroidered patches are quite similar, there are a few key differences that may help you decide which is best for your design. Embroidered patches are made by stitching a design onto an existing fabric base, giving them a more textured and slightly thicker feel. In contrast, woven patches are created by weaving the entire design from scratch, resulting in a smoother surface where the text or logo cannot be felt.
This difference in production makes embroidered patches great for simple, bold designs that capture a retro or vintage feel, perfect for that classic, iconic look. Woven patches, on the other hand, are ideal for more complex and detailed designs, as they can capture finer elements better than embroidery. If your design uses more than 12 colours or contains gradients, a printed patch may be an even better option to ensure all the intricacies are preserved.
