All About Sewing Labels

What are sewing labels?

Sewing labels are a great way to showcase your branding and add a personalized touch to the items you create. Custom sew-in labels for clothing are added to projects using either a sewing machine or hand sewing the label to the item.

Dutch Label Shop sewing labels come in two varieties: woven and printed. Woven Sewing Labels are our most professional option for labels. They offer the precision perfect for text and logos, have a luxurious hand feel, and will ensure that your label will endure wash-after-wash. However, if your design uses more than twelve colours, has highly detailed imagery and smooth color gradients, then you will require an eye-catching Printed Label for your items.

What are sew-on labels used for?

There are plenty of ways to use sew-on clothing labels. Dutch Label Shop creates personalized sewing labels that can work for basically any sewing project, such as:

  • Apparel & outerwear
  • Face masks & scarves
  • Costumes
  • Handbags & accessories
  • Plush toys & stuffed animals
  • Tapestries, linens, sheets, & quilts
  • Pet clothing, jackets, and carriers
  • Backpacks, satchels, and outdoor equipment
  • Handmade delicate items
  • Furniture tags and much more!

Sew-in labels are also a great option if you're looking for custom hem tags, and you can also use them as hat labels. Whatever kind of sew-on label for clothing you're looking for, we have you covered.

Where should I add my sew-on label?

Custom sewing labels have an amazing amount of versatility, no matter where you might want to attach them on your clothing items. One great way to use sew-on tags for clothing is by adding them to the collar area. Some great examples of sew-on clothing labels on the collar are branded labels and size labels.

You may also want to space out your customized sew-in clothing labels by attaching a smaller one in a fold on the hem. A hem tag can be sewn into clothing anywhere, from an outside chest pocket to the bottom hem of a shirt or on a shirt sleeve.

Another great placement for sew-on tags for clothing is along the inside seams, especially for size labels, branding labels, and made-in labels.

If you're looking to organize items or make sure they get returned, you can also create sew-in name labels for clothing.

Sew-in label or sew-on label? Please explain

Hey, they actually mean the same thing. You’ll see and hear those terms used interchangeably to describe applications for things like Sewing Labels, Sewing Tags, Sew-in Name Tags, Sew-on Labels, and sew on and sew forth…. Whether you want a sewn label that's sewn-in or a sewn tag that's sewn on, it's just another way of saying the ole' needle and thread is coming out to attach that custom sew-in label. And, if you really want to get into semantics, the difference in phrasing comes down to what people may be talking about sewing: you might see something sewn into clothing, or you might see a custom sewing label sewn onto the collar. At the end of the day, just remember: a sew-on clothing label is the same thing as a sew-in clothing label.

If you are looking for a no-sew option and prefer not to use sewing labels, iron-on labels are another great easy and quick alternative.

How Do You Sew On A Label?

Hand sew or machine sew, sew into the seam for a discreet finish or make a statement using bold and bright stitches, there are many ways to sew on your sewing labels.

Check out our guide about how to sew on different types of sewing labels for hassle free application.

How Do You Sew A Seam On A Label?

When designing your custom labels, you will first need to consider how your labels will be attached to the items. Some labels (like centerfold labels) are sewn into a seam, so the raw edges are hidden in a seam. This means the label will need enough black space (seam allowance) at the top and bottom of the label so that the text/design isn't cut off when placed into the seam.

Other labels can be stitched down flat at the back neck or waistband. Just make sure when you are designing your labels to take into account where the stitches will be and keep that area clear so that your design wont be cut off or ruined by the stitch marks.

If you're using our Design Uploader tool, you can add additional seam allowance around the outside of your design to give you more space to work with.
